Save Pune Traffic Movement

Promoting safe, sustainable and inclusive transportation

Walkable Pune

Walking is the most fundamental, rightful and inclusive form of mobility.  Everyone walks.  To the corner shop.  To the bus stop or metro station.  Some people even walk 10+ km each way to work!  Therefore SPTM gives the highest priority to the convenience and safety of pedestrians.

We are working on several initiatives, projects and campaigns to make sure that Pune is a walkable city and pedestrians are safer in Pune.  Click on a button below to learn more.

Improving the infrastructure

Footpaths and crossings

Before

After

Clean, free footpaths are essential for being able to walk safely and with dignity.  We work with PMC to keep footpaths clear and walkable.

We also mobilize volunteers to develop a sense of community ownership of a walkable realm in our locality.

We work with PMC to have them repaint faded zebras and repair pedestrian signals.  For this purpose, we use the ‘PMC Care’ facility very effectively.

A happy mom experiences the ped signals with a timer

The timer you see in the pedestrian signals are a fruit of our effort!  Now you know how much time you have to cross, before you start crossing the road.

Education

पाऊल पुढे? – हात समोर!

Sticking your hand out while crossing a street can potentially save 50% pedestrians fatalities.  We are building a large campaign around this theme.

How to stop before the stop line?

Do you habitually setp over the stop line at a signal?  Learn the ‘Follow the Foot’ technique and stop before the stop line – every time, safely!

We conduct ‘Catch ’em Young’ workshops to imbibe best practices for safe and responsible road use in children at a young and impressionable age.

These workshops have a positive impact on not only the young children, but also their parents!

Collaboration

We actively collaborate with not only Government organizations like PMC and Pune Traffic Police, but also with citizen entities like educational institutes, NCC, NSS, Mohalla Committees, other NGOs working in the domain, Rotary Clubs etc.

Public Engagement

Hon Mayor Shri Murlidhar Mohol announces a ‘Pedestrians Day’ for Pune city

The ‘Pedestrians’ Day’ observed in Pune is SPTM’s brainchild!  Observing the Pedestrians’ Day is a very effective way of sensitizing people about why safety and convenience of pedestrians should be Pune’s top priority.

Children must be able to walk safely on our streets

People with all physical abilities must be able to move around independently

Times of India, 11-Dec-2024

We periodically write in Marathi and English newspapers on topics that talk about the nuances of walkability.

Data analysis

We believe in data driven actions.  Not only by the city, but also by us!  The need for everything we do is supported by data and evidence.

Number of pedestrian fatalities

Map of traffic crashes

We analyze fatalities and create charts and maps so that Traffic Police can take data driven and informed decisions.

Our survey of walking habits revealed that a whopping 55% people walk with their back to traffic!  Our school workshops will now cover this problem too.

Our survey of footpath usage shows why pedestrians don’t use some footpaths and still walk on road, but some are used heavily.
